For a lot of kids in Gunnedah, it’s with the Black and Blue Boxing Pups.
Trainer Wayne Kemp runs classes for juniors three nights a week.
The numbers are slowly increasing and if you take a look at Kemp’s philosophy, you can see why.
“It’s about making it fun for them,” Kemp said.
“It’s not all about teaching them to fight or anything, especially the under 10s, but more about keeping them fit.
“Some people do it for confidence, some do it to get fit but we always have fun with it and have become a bit of a family, too.”

Some of the youngsters move onto the senior ranks and take up amateur boxing.
One of those juniors is Bailey Tull who had his first fight in November at Bathurst. Tull took home a win and will be chasing a second victory this weekend. Black ‘N’ Blue Boxing Gunnedah trainer David Syphers has been impressed by Tull’s determination.
“He’s going good. He’s a dedicated fighter, he loves boxing and he’s a good trainer, he’s improving all the time,” Syphers said of Tull.
Along with Tull, Syphers will be taking a group of about seven fighters to Dubbo for the Christmas Fight Night on Saturday.
“That’d be nice if we can [win all our fights],” Syphers said.
“It’d be a good way to end the year and I think we can. We’re going to definitely match them all.”
The juniors have already finished up for the year. The classes will start again on January 30. Mixed classes are run on Tuesdays and Thursdays with under 10s from 4-5 and under 16s from 5-6 while Wednesdays are girls only classes.
