Hosted by the Gunnedah RSL Sub-Branch, the ceremony included readings from poems, artificts from prisoner of war camps and a reading of the honour roll to pay tribute to locals who served in the 8th Division.
Gunnedah RSL Sub-Branch president Peter Kannengiesser said he was pleased with the turn out at the service.
“There is more people here than we expected which is outstanding,” Mr Kannengiesser said.
“It’s services like this that help preserve the memory of those who have served.”
Featuring at the ceremony was an Australian flag that was preserved by prisoners of war in Singapore’s Changi prison.
The flag was on-loan from the Gunnedah Historical Society which co-hosted the ceremony.
