Eight eager boats were rigged and ready for the starter for the morning race as a lovely early breeze petered out as the start time arrived. The lake was very much more to the water skiers’ delight than to the sailors.
Lap one of the course was a slow yet closely contested affair between Keith Garrett, Dave Bailey, Tim Corben and Dave Aylwin. In his Maricat, Aylwin went on to take line honours from Corben, who hung in there to just beat Bailey and Garrett home in their laser dinghies.
Robert Kelly followed up his big sailing effort at Chaffey the previous weekend with a good finish in the laser fleet, before steering “Dragonfly” to second in the afternoon.
Once again the laser sailors packed up their boats to crew for trailer-sailer boats in the afternoon race – now called “The Trailer-Sailer Challenge Series”.
Gunnedah’s Stan White lead the race from start to finish with his yacht “Hey Jude”.
It was a very polished performance with White’s forehand, Don Underwood, showing how to set a shy masthead spinnaker faultlessly and gain extra metres on opponents on the downwind legs.
Shadowing “Hey Jude” were the crew on board “Dragonfly”, who is desperation hung out larger and larger spinnakers from the masthead in a vain attempt to catch the race leader.
Line honours went again to Manilla Maricat sailor, Aylwin, but on handicap the results were: “Hey Jude” first, “Dragonfly” second and the Maricat third.
