This Saturday marks the 99th anniversary of the end of ‘the war to end all wars’ and Gunnedah locals will gather at the town’s cenotaph to remember and pay respect to all of those who fought for Australia in the conflict.
The ceremony will be hosted by Gunnedah RSL sub-branch president Peter Kannengiesser and Gunnedah Anglican Church Assistant Minister Aiden Sibrava.
Mr Kannengiesser said the ceremony will acknowledge people from the Gunnedah region who paid the supreme sacrifice during war.
“We will be paying close attention to the 82 locals who died in 1917 alone,” he said.
“As well as that we are wanting to reinforce how important it is to provide ongoing support to those currently serving our nation.”
The Gunnedah Legacy Contact Group will also be raising funds by reinstating it’s ‘Field of Remembrance’ fundraiser.
Legacy Contact Group Chairman Kerry Bee said locals can write the name of anybody who has served on the cross and they will be placed around the cenotaph.
“The crosses are to honour anybody who has served, not just in World War One but all conflicts,” Mr Bee said.
“The group will be selling the crosses at the cenotaph leading up to remembrance day and they are only a gold coin donation.”
“Money raised from the field of remembrance will go towards the work Legacy does for the community.”
The ceremony will be held at the Gunnedah cenotaph from 10.40am on Saturday November 11.
A moment’s silence will be observed at 11am sharp.
Mackellar Care Service will hold a service at the Alkira Campus at 10.30am on Friday, November 10.
