Lewis Donaldson (Grade 6) and Charlie Bridge (Grade 4) will compete in the junior and senior sections of the competition respectively.
Lewis said he was feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement ahead of the competition on November 8.
“It’s my first time so i’m not to sure what to expect,” he said.
“At the moment I am feeling a bit of a mix between nerves and excitement.”
The 12 year old from Mary’s Mount will be accompanied to Sydney by his family.
“I know it will be a lot of fun and it will be really good to have my whole family there cheering me on,” he said.
Gunnedah South Public School acting principal Nicky Walsh said everyone at the school was wishing the students well.
“We are very proud of these two," Ms Walsh said.
“There will be 43 competitors from across NSW at the event and I’m sure our students will do really well.”
Ms Walsh said reading has played a big part in the students spelling prowess.
“Reading is just such a natural progression for learning to spell,” she said.
“Kids can read about whatever interests them and learn new words and improve spelling without even realising it.”
The students will depart for Sydney on Tuesday afternoon but Lewis is hoping to be back from the competiton in time for one of the school’s biggest events.
“We are having our school fete on Friday so I’m hoping to be back in time for that,” he said.
The 2017 Premier’s Spelling Bee will be broadcast live on digital radio and the Gunnedah South Public School fete starts at 5pm on Friday.
