However on October 14 he donned his gear for charity.
Mr Poss said despite it being physically demanding, the experience was very enjoyable.
“It was bloody hard, but we went really well,” Mr Poss said.
“I certainly earned my beer afterward.”
The Gunnedah local took on the challenge with comrades from his former station Uralla and said their company made the climb easier.
“It was good to have some company,” he said.
“It was really hard and I nearly collapsed at the top, but luckily I got some help up there and only finished 12 minutes behind the winner.”
Gunnedah Fire and Rescue captain David Welch praised Daniel’s commitment.
“Dan has put in a huge commitment for a great cause,” Mr Welch said.
“He is a champion bloke and Gunnedah FRNSW is very proud of him.”
Mr Poss said he couldn’t have raised so much money without the help of several local businesses.
“There are so many I need to thank,” he said.
“Woolworths Gunnedah for putting on a barbeque for us to help raise funds, Whitehaven Coal for their generous donation, Biz Industries, Royal Hotel Tambar Springs, the Gunnedah Hotel, Mornington Butchers, Blue Denim, Platinum and the general public for all of their support in raising the funds.”
Every dollar raised by Mr Poss will directly support vital MND research at the Macquarie University MND Research Centre.
