The accident, which happened shortly before 3am, cut power to more than 100 homes in Gunnedah.
The accident occurred on the corner of View and Kilcoy Streets when the driver left the road, mounted the nature strip and stuck the power pole.
Local residents Leon and Rhonda Couples said the crash woke them.
“It was an almighty bang,” Mr Couples said.
Mr Couples also said the driver walked from the vehicle and fled the scene.
“I don’t know how he got out of it without worse injuries,” he said.
Mrs Couples said she feared it could have been a lot worse when she first saw the wreckage.
“Just the way it was wrapped around the pole, you didn’t know what you were going to find,” she said.
An Essential Energy spokesperson said crews were hopeful power would be restored to affected homes by 4pm on Thursday.
