Mr Crosby said the sale, which starts at noon, will be conducted using the low stress Helmsman selling system. He said bulls would be yarded for inspection from 10am.
“Buyers purchasing this age range of bulls are finding that they can use the bulls while they are getting to know their new surroundings and the new owner can monitor their growth to suit their individual mating loads,” Mr Crosby said.
“At Kansas Angus we have always begun joining bulls kept for our own use at around 15 months of age and the bulls still grow out to expected weights.
“By not allowing bulls to get too heavy before their working life begins and during their off season, a bull owner can usually get a couple of more breeding seasons from their bulls.”
He recommends keeping bulls in an “athletic” weight range.
“It is nice to see a big fat bull in the paddock but seeing such a bull is usually the sign of an impending breakdown or slowdown of bull libido; sometimes you can kill a bull with kindness,” Mr Crosby said.
“Bulls bred at Kansas Angus are designed to meet the requirements of cattle producers who are breeding for specific markets, such as feeder steers or replacement heifers.
“At Kansas we have always concentrated on the cow – she is the beginning, plus good muscling and yield for the supermarket and most importantly longevity.”
Mr Crosby said many producers are reporting bulls still going at up to 13 years of age.
