According to stud principal Stuart Halliday, pastoralists in central and northern Australia have the biggest uptake in regard to using yearling bulls.
“In the past British bred bulls introduced at two years of age have not adapted well with many dying,” Mr Halliday said. “Yearlings have proven to be more adaptable and they also have a lower incidence of breakdown because they are lighter.”
Erica Halliday said Ben Nevis now has bulls at work from North Queensland to Alice Springs and down to Oodnadatta as well as in studs and commercial herds in the east.
Ben Nevis has been providing yearling bulls to clients for more than 20 years. According to the Hallidays, there is still much to learn, but one thing that is crucial is that the bulls are well grown and sexually mature.
“Our bulls average over 550kg at 12 months. This puts them in good stead to work strongly then continue to grow. We also early-wean to set them up with a well-developed rumen and immune system to cope with sometimes harsh environments.”
Ben Nevis is a fifth generation, 1100 cow, family business committed to hitting the high quality and branded beef markets. They will offer 75 yearling bulls and 350 Angus heifers this year at 12pm, on September 13.
A Ben Nevis blood heifer sale will start the on-property sale and he live auction will be interfaced with Auction Plus and feature Ben Nevis, Warrabah Station, Kanimbla and Cedars Pastoral.
