From the two days of basketball – girls played on Tuesday and boys on Wednesday – Gunnedah South Public School’s girls teams performed the best of the local lot.
The girls moved through to the gala day grand final but eventually went down 31-5 to a strong Quirindi Public School outfit.
Jono Willis, one of the gala day coordinators, said there was plenty of talent on show.
“A lot of the kids are fairly new to the sport but teams have the odd rep player or ones that play in a local competition, there’s certainly a lot of potential [amongst the kids],” Willis said.
“There was some really good kids there today and some with not a lot of basketball experience but give them some training and they could go well.”
In the boys competition, Quirindi completed the double for the school with a 66-8 win over Sandon Public School.
Craig Long, another coordinator for the day, said the effort Sandon’s players put in was huge but they simply came up against a red hot team.
“They were the dominant team all day,” Long said of Quirindi.
“They were sensational today.
“They are one of the better teams I’ve seen come through the carnival.”
The two Quirindi Public School sides will now progress onto the next stage.
They will take on the winner’s from the North Coast region.
