On Thursday morning, the Namoi Valley Independent made a sad discovery, spotting a dead koala on the edge of the Breeza Plains.
The koala appeared to have been hit by a vehicle and then crawled off the road and died.
The marsupial appeared to have been in good health before the accident.
The incident serves as a good reminder to drivers to be vigilant about looking out for wildlife, especially at dawn and dusk.
Drivers are also reminded that if they hit an animal and it is safe to pull over, they should check on its condition and phone WIRES on 1300 094 737.
Koalas in particular, are very resilient animals and can survive a hit from vehicles as big as a truck and train.
In 2015, the NVI followed the story of a koala that was hit by a train near Breeza. The koala is still alive to this day.
