Oliver was the most popular name for boys for the second year in a row, while Olivia took out the top spot for girls.
Oliver John Neilson was born at Gunnedah Hospital on April 11, 2017 to Matt and Melissa Neilson, weighing 8lb 1oz.
Oliver’s proud grandparents are Laraine and Kevin Finlay, of Sydney and Kristine and Peter Neilson, of Muswellbrook.
First-time-mum Melissa said she has dreamed of calling her child Oliver since she was a teenager.
“It was a choice I made as a teenager, that if I ever had a boy, he would be called Oliver,” Melissa said.
“I’ve just always loved the name – it’s a nice name.
“I didn’t realise it was so popular until after we had spoken about it and definitely decided it was the one.”
Oliver’s dad Matt said his son’s middle name, John, had family significance.
“John is a family name on both sides so it was nice to be able to use it for Oliver’s middle name,” Matt said.
The Neilson family are now home from hospital and are enjoying getting to know their newborn son and introducing him to friends and family.
The top five boys names for 2016 were Oliver, William, Jack, Noah and Lucas.
The top five girls names for 2016 were Olivia, Charlotte, Amelia, Ava and Mia.
