The Year 9 students attend St Mary’s College and are exceeding in the realm of computers both inside and outside the classroom.
The pair have been taking part in Grok Learning’s Web.Comp 2017 for the past five weeks, testing their website design skills against students from around the world. And they have come away with “perfect scores”, according to their IST teacher, Suz Feodoroff.
Ms Feodoroff said her class had been learning about web design through Grok Learning, and Caleb and Zac had been making good progress so she told them about the competition. The teens have been working on their competition entries in their own time and had to submit their final web design by Sunday.
“The commitment to get that done has been outstanding,” Ms Feodoroff said.
The teacher said Caleb and Zac were "independent learners” when it came to IST and helped other students.
“These guys have done a heck of a lot of work,” she said.
“What I’m impressed with is their persistence as well. When these guys are faced with a problem, they work out how to solve it.
“It’s really important for me to see kids persisting with problems and finding solutions.”
Zac said he and Caleb were good with computers and used code to make websites.
“I do [coding] because I’m interested in it and it gives me something to do,” Zac said.
Caleb said he wasn’t a “very creative person” when it came to web design but he enjoyed the work behind it.
“I like coding – the background of computers,” he said.
“You just learn how everything’s done in computers.”
Principal Max Quirk said it was good to see teachers supporting students in areas where they showed good skills.
“You never know what kids can do, where their talents lie,” he said.
“Web design – it’s the world of the future. We’re trying to prepare students for the world of the future.”
