Dogs NSW said there were a multitude of reasons to celebrate “the magic and unconditional love of puppies”.
Gunnedah RSPCA often has puppies in care and has plenty of advice for current and future puppies owners.
“It’s a big responsibility. It’s like having a new member in your family,” member Gail Pickett said.
It’s very important to socialise puppies and spend quality time with them.”
Mrs Pickett said some of the important things owners need to do are teach their puppies manners such as sitting, take them for regular walks, and play with them.
“If you don’t take the time to do these things, you may end up with your dogs getting bored. They could start barking and digging in your garden,” she said.
The RSPCA member said people need to be careful when they are choosing a puppy, especially if they are using the Internet.
“They may not have had vaccinations. They might not be microchipped,” Mrs Pickett said.
“Any animal bought or given away has to be microchipped.”
Mrs Pickett said to be wary of breeders who don’t want potential owners to see where the puppies are kept because it may be a puppy farm.
“If you’re trying to buy a puppy, try and see the parents and the living conditions,” she said.
The RSPCa currently has two puppies in care – Hugo and Willy.
Hugo is a four-month old male german short-haired pointer cross. He is loving, loyal and a bit goofy. He is super friendly and loves being with people, especially those who deal out pats.
Being a puppy, Hugo would benefit from some training such as puppy school. He gets on well with other dogs and loves to play.
He would be suited to a family home where he will get plenty of pats, attention and love.
Willy is an eight-week-old German Shepherd kelpie cross. He is a big ball of fluff and loves to chew on your fingers. He is a laid-back puppy but enjoys a good rumble too. Willy interacts well with people and dogs and enjoys a good run in the yard. Willy will grow to the size of a medium dog.
The cost of puppies aged six months or under is $350. The cost of dogs, or puppies aged over six months is $320. These adoption fees include desexing, microchip, up-to-date vaccinations, worm/flea treatment and a vet health check.
