Project Koala partners Gunnedah Urban Landcare have made the trees available for people to plant as part of the campaign after they were donated to Landcare by MacKellar Excavations.
But, Gunnedah Urban Landcare secretary Rod Browne said, it’s not yet the right time to plant.
The group, which has a strong history of tree plantings in koala corridors including plantings on the Wandobah river flats and at Pensioners Hill, advises
that planting in the cooler weather of autumn will be the best time.
Among the trees are river red gums, tumbledown gums, white box, bimble box and yellow box gums all “bear friendly” trees according to Gunnedah Urban Landcare member Hans Allgayer, who is taking care of the trees until planting time.
One of Gunnedah’s Project Koala aims is to plant 1000 trees to strengthen koala corridors.
The Namoi Valley Independent will soon be calling on people to put their hands up for trees to assist in the project, and will provide a guide to planting and maintaining the trees.
