Gunnedah WIRES volunteer and koala carer Martine Moran said the male koala was “very sick” when he came into her care, and had been found by a landholder sitting low in a tree with “crusted-over eyes and in poor condition”.
“After being taken in care and given a course of medication, his eyes have healed and he has put on weight,” Mrs Moran said.
On Saturday, the koala was released back onto the same property he came from.
“He was very happy to be home and went straight up the tree where he was found,” Mrs Moran said.
“It was about three minutes before he was eating.
“The landowners on the Wandobah Road were very pleased to have him back. They have provided him with his own water and he has a large selection of trees to visit around the property.”
Mrs Moran said it was “lovely” to see Old Fella settle back in and “up a tree, happy as a koala can be”.
