The evening began with a fun round of bingo, followed by dinner and exchange of gifts between VIEW Friends, who remain secret all year and will be revealed at the February meeting.
Kate Knight’s grand-daughters Mackenzie and Charlette Keeler, dressed as elves, arrived to hand out Secret Santa gifts and their presence each year is much appreciated.
New member Susan Moore received her badge and member’s pack from President Margaret Stevens, while Lyn Boal was given a fond farewell as she moves to Queensland with her family.
In 1960, George Forbes, then general secretary of The Smith Family, saw the potential for an organisation which allowed women from all walks of life to develop interests outside the home, providing friendship, education and mental stimulation.
At the same time he hoped to offer these women the means to assist others less fortunate through The Smith Family and so the VIEW Club was formed - Voice, Interest, and Education for Women.
Gunnedah Evening VIEW Club members fundraise regularly during the year to help support three Learning for Life students with their education, while also donating to The Smith Family’s winter and Christmas appeals.
It was very heartening for members to read thank you letters and profiles from the three Learning for Life students with information about themselves and their studies. They all appear to be progressing well at school.
VIEW members attended school presentations during the month to present prizes donated by the club.
Subs of $25 are due at the annual general meeting to be held on February 7. Members encouraged to nominate for a position on the committee as some are stepping down after their three-year terms.
