“I want to congratulate [Carinya] for their vision for this community,” Gunnedah shire mayor Jamie Chaffey said.
“It’s obviously coming on the back of success to date. They’ve been committed to this town for 18 years [and] they’ve reaped the awards because now there’s a waiting list to get into some of the classes and the numbers have swelled.”
Cr Chaffey said all of his children attended Carinya in Gunnedah and had hoped the school would expand.
“I’ve had conversation with their team across in Tamworth and I certainly passed on my personal view that I would love for them to get to the situation where they would deliver all the way from prep through to Year 12, and I hope that’s something they will work on,” he said.
“It does play an important part for many families that are looking to have their children educated in a smaller school and the strong Christian values that Carinya offer in their education system.
“I think it will keep people in our town as well rather than going over to Tamworth.”
Chamber president Stacey Cooke said the news was “fantastic”.
“There have been buses full of kids going to Tamworth every day and the population of our town is growing and it is something that is needed,” she said.
“I think it will keep people in our town as well rather than going over to Tamworth.
“It’s nice for parents to be able to have a variety of schools to send their child to.”
A Fairfax poll found that 84 per cent of our readers are in support of a third high school in Gunnedah.
