The call for greater security follows a number of incidents in the last week where a vehicle was stolen from a residential address in Gunnedah that was later revealed to have been left unlocked and an incident where property was stolen from an unlocked and unattended vehicle in Gunnedah CBD.
Gunnedah police Inspector Michael Wurth said electronic items were a popular target for thieves.
"Electronic devices such as phones, laptops and tablets along with cash are common items stolen from motor vehicles," Inspector Wurth said.
"People should take these items with them when possible, or at the very least store them out of sight in the vehicle, and though it may sound obvious, owners should ensure that vehicles are locked and windows fully wound up,” he said.
Inspector Wurth said while it is vital for people to lock their vehicles people should not lock pets or kids in unattended vehicles.
“It goes without saying that children and pets should not be left inside unattended vehicles,” he said.
“Vehicle owners might also want to consider additional vehicle security including steering wheel/transmission locks and car alarms to minimise the risk of their vehicle being stolen.”
