The $11.4 million project will see a complete upgrade of the facility including improved amenities and activities for children.
Gunnedah Shire Council (GSC) Special Projects Manager Mike Silver said the existing war memorial would not be affected by the demolition.
“Either side of the war memorial will be demolished but the memorial will remain untouched and be preserved,” Mr Silver said.
The demolition phase of the project is expected to take three weeks to complete.
To celebrate the construction commencement Gunnedah Shire Council will be hosting a sod turning ceremony to mark the official beginning of construction at the site on October 24.
The ceremony will be held at the Gunnedah Memorial Pool Complex on October 24 from 4.30pm with a free barbecue to follow.
