Embracing the theme 27 Dresses from the movie, members gathered up a collection of bridesmaid gowns, bridal gowns and mother-of-the bride outfits for a fashion parade with a difference.
While some were able to model outfits from days gone by, others enthusiastically took part in a “coat-hanger parade” where gowns were carried onto the catwalk and presented with memories from “that special day”.
A delicate lace gown worn by the late Beryl Campbell for her wedding in Newcastle 77 years ago was also on display.
The 27th birthday cake was made by Anne Finnigan with a carrot cake for the top layer and a wedding fruitcake on the bottom layer taken home in gift bags.
The club’s newest member Jo Aldrey was invited to cut the cake with president Margaret Stevens and national councillor Barbara Hyslop who travelled from Tamworth for the celebration.
Barbara Hyslop congratulated members on achieving 27 years as a club and thanked them for their ongoing support of disadvantaged children through the Smith Family’s Learning for Life sponsorship program.
Ms Hyslop read an extract from an address given by a former student describing the enormous difference the support had meant to him and his family. He is in his final year of a university degree.
Margaret Stevens was also commended for her service to VIEW over the past 26 years, many of those were served on committee. Members were given an overview of the very successful recent National Convention in Tamworth.
Next month the club will celebrate the Melbourne Cup with everyone encouraged to dress in their race day finery. Prizes will be awarded for prettiest and most inventive hat.
The dinner meeting will be held at Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club on Wednesday, November 1, at 6.30 for 7pm.
Apologies and names of guests should be phoned to Kate Knight (6742 3926) by the Monday prior. The competition door is Chris Mirow with Lyn Hills to provide the lucky door prize.
