The group is in the process of beautifying the stairs at the side of the building with a koala mural as part of the Vibrant Precinct Project.
The mural was designed by Arts Shed member and local artist, Helen Stanley, and features koalas walking, climbing, sleeping and drinking, with reminders to watch out for them and provide water.
“We’re trying to promote the fact that koalas die in the summer months because they don’t have access to water,” Ms Stanley said.
In a special acknowledgement of the late Nancy Small, the narrative will also feature the words, “Nancy Small loved them all”.
“It’s something special for the town,” Ms Stanley said.
“It’s important for the town to remember people like her.”
Sydney-based and internationally-renowned street artist, Silly Pear and local Des Mullion created two murals about Gunnedah’s identity in the Conadilly streets alleyway, featuring Red Chief, koalas and windmills. Chanelle Windsor also assisted.
Regional artist Daniel Stanley worked alongside Gunnedah’s Alice Weinthal and Louisa Riordan on another mural in the alleyway, capturing the essence of Gunnedah’s native animals.
A community notice board will also be installed in The Smithurst Theatre courtyard to promote community events and groups.
The precinct project was formed following community consultation in May, which encouraged collaboration in projects of activation, and street art and murals to bring vibrancy, action and creativity into Gunnedah’s CBD.
