Essential Energy said for the safety of the public and their property the network was automatically switched off shortly before 6pm.
Crews patrolled the electricity network and after ensuring it was safe, power was restored to all customers by 8.42pm.
Manager Community Relations Northern, David Crough said the exact cause is unknown but reports from the community indicate that lightning may have struck the electricity network.
The outage follows another widespread unplanned power outage in the Gunnedah region on Wednesday morning, caused by a transformer issue, affecting 6500 homes and businesses in the area.
