A widespread unplanned power outage in the Gunnedah region on Wednesday morning, caused by a transformer issue, affected 6500 homes and businesses in the area.

Essential Energy said the outage included Breeza, Caroona, Carroll, Curlewis, Emerald Hill, Kelvin, Mullaley, Tambar Springs and Wandobah Road.
Manager community relations northern David Crough said for the safety of the public and their property the electricity network automatically switched power off to 6500 customers at 6.40am.
“Crews responded immediately and identified an issue with the main electricity transformer for the area,” Mr Crough said.
“After ensuring it was safe to do so, crews restored power to all customers between 7.55am and 8.04am by rerouting the electricity network to the backup transformer for the area.”
The transformer forms part of Essential Energy’s Gunnedah Zone Substation which converts high voltage power to a lower level which can then be distributed throughout the community.
“Specialised technicians from Tamworth will now assist our Gunnedah crews to undertake testing on the main transformer to ensure it is functioning correctly before returning it to service,” Mr Crough said.
“We apologise for any inconvenience and thank customers for their patience while we worked to restore power.”
