Lucy Lincoln and Kaitlin Smith have been chosen to take the once-in-a-lifetime trip during the September school holidays.
The opportunity was open to students who are part of Girls Academy, an international program launched at the school in March.
The seven-day tour will be funded by Idemitsu Australia Resources with the aim of sharing cultural insights and introducing the students to Idemitsu and Japan. Three students from Muswellbrook will also be attending.
The school asked Girls Academy members to put in expressions of interest for the trip, which were signed off by principal Shane Kelly, and then sent on to an executive team to be reviewed.
Kaitlin put in a last-minute application and found out she was successful in early June.
“I cried,” she said.
“I was really excited.”
The tour will start and finish in Tokyo, and will include visits to cultural sites in Kyoto and Hiroshima, and a trip to Universal Studios or Tokyo Disneyland.
Kaitlin said it would be a “big eye-opener” to go to another country.
“This is my first time overseas. I’m going to be lost without my mum,” she said.
“It’s going to be so different from Australia.”
Girls Academy program manager, Blanche Biles, said the trip would “empower” the teenagers.
“We’re just so proud of them,” she said.
“The opportunity is there but a lot of our Indigenous students don’t have the finances to go.
“It’s a big thing to go to another part of the world from a little town.”
Kaitlin said it was a encouraged her fellow youth to take advantage of opportunities such as this one.
“If you ever get the opportunity, try your very hardest to get in because I would have regretted it if I didn’t apply,” she said.
The Year 10 student has been part of the academy since the launch and said she always felt welcome.
“It’s like home at school. I know that when I’m struggling, if I come in here then they’ll help me,” she said.
