The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards saw 10,000 entries in 2016, with 4000 received so far this year.
Ms Macaulay is confident there are plenty more to come, with a multitude of schools registered for the competition.
“There are still hundreds of schools to put their stuff up yet,” she said.
The ability to upload entries online has been a helpful tool for schools.
“It’s just so much easier to upload, and it’s easier just having it all there,” Ms Macaulay said.
The project officer said there were a number of local entries.
“Gunnedah High School has entered for the first time in a while,” she said.
“I had some [poetry] workshops there on Monday and Wednesday and the kids seemed quite interested, which was good.”
Poems have also been submitted by students at Gunnedah South Public School, Carinya Christian School Gunnedah and Curlewis Public School. Ms Macaulay still hopes to see entries from Gunnedah Public School where she will hold a workshop next week.
