The original Cup meeting was to have been run May 28 but was washed out. It was to have been the second of a three-meeting Winter Carnival, starting with the Somerton Cup meeting and finalising with the July 7 Curlewis Cup meeting.
Racing NSW has rescheduled the Gunnedah Cup meeting to Monday, August 21 with a seven-race TAB program highlighted by the $30,000 Gunnedah Cup (1600m).
GJC president Kevin Edmonds is delighted to have the chance to run a 2017 Gunnedah Cup and believes it will make it a big week in the town.
“It’s the Monday before Ag Quip,” he said. “Our other option had been to run on the Thursday but everybody will be at Ag Quip and it would be too hard for trainers to get here with the traffic.
“We are delighted to be able to run it and celebrate our 150 years of racing too. And with the Curlewis Cup meeting on July 7, it will still be a part of our Winter carnival.”
He said the next meeting at Riverside is the July 7 Curlewis Cup meeting. And given that it is held during the school holidays, a healthy crowd could be in attendance for a good lead-in to the Gunnedah Cup meeting. The Curlewis Cup is a $20,000 1600m feature.
Last year’s Gunnedah Cup meeting was a major success with turnover of $1.4 million.
This year’s seven-race Gunnedah Cup program includes the $30,000 Gunnedah Cup (1600m), the $22,000 Lightning Handicap (1000m), the $20,000 benchmark 55 (2050m).
