Gleeson presents an extensive – and offensive – list of reasons not to visit the Country Music Capital on his ABC TV travel show.
But he stands firm on his love for his hometown.
Gleeson is asked by country music artist Beccy Cole and Tamworth mayor Col Murray: “Aren’t you from Gunnedah?”
He quipped he was warning people not to go to Tamworth and waste their holidays in the wrong spot.
“I was born in Gunnedah, I like Gunnedah more than Tamworth. I think Tamworth is the Shelbyville,” he said.
Tamworth mayor Col Murray said he thought Gleeson would be more supportive of the country, coming from Gunnedah, and that his thoughts weren’t “supported by the massive amounts of visitors” to the town. He said Tamworth boasted 50,000 visitors on that day of the festival alone.
Gleeson says: “Why on earth would you go to Tamworth” and that he travelled on a small plane “against his better judgement, so you don’t have to”.
He said if driving from Sydney to Brisbane, the best way to avoid Tamworth is through Gunnedah.
More to come.
