The MOL north west committee-sponsored golf day was headlined by special guest and former Newcastle Knights premiership forward Matt Parsons.
More than 100 players swung into the charity golf competition, won by the ambrose team of Tim Kennedy, Peter Vernon, Luke Isbester and Koby Harris.
Meanwhile, John and Fay Hausfeld won the four-ball, best-ball par event.
North west committee president Don Pascoe said the event reached its fundraising target with the help of golf club donations and a memorabilia auction, as well as invaluable support of their major and minor sponsors.
All funds raised go assist men, women and children of all ages in the rugby league community, who have fallen on tough times.
Just recently the north west committee applied for a small funding grant to assist retired local player Bob Adamson, who has been suffering ill health at Alkira Aged Care in Gunnedah.
Pascoe said Adamson won 10 premierships during playing his career. He started in Manilla and was player-coach at West Tamworth before moving on to Newcastle.
He even trialled with the St George Dragons.
Adamson joined John “Bomber” Peard and fellow players in support of the 2016 MOL Gunnedah day.
The highlight for Pascoe at this year’s event was camaraderie among players past and present, including former teammate Merv Turner.
“I played outside a few centres in the state side and he was one of the best,” Pascoe said.
Nicknamed “Swerving Merv’n”, the former Gunnedah Bulldog was one of the first to be inducted into the club’s hall of fame.
Matt Parsons made the trip up from Werris Creek for as special guest at the golf day.
Pascoe said it was timely appearance for the north west MOL branch which is seeking to establish a new sub-committee in the area.
The branch has a “sprinkling” of members around Qurindi and the Creek, but with the influence of Parsons and his NRL background, it hopes to secure more to benefit of the the wider region.
The north west committee is also calling for more membership throughout its coverage area which stretches from Moree to Tamworth and takes in all centres in between.
