The program offers students the opportunity of a lifetime to live in another country for 12 months.
The students live with host families and attend a host school.
“It’s a chance to see the world through a different perspective and to be an ambassador for Australia,” a Rotary spokesperson said.
Exchanges are made with Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Taiwan.
The Gunnedah clubs – Rotary Club of Gunnedah, Rotary Club of Gunnedah West and Rotary Club of Gunnedah 2380 – have a long history of hosting overseas students, however it has been 13 years since a Gunnedah student took advantage of the program and lived overseas.
Over the past five years the clubs have hosted students from Finland, Brazil, Belgium, and Italy.
Luzie Schwentke, from Germany is currently in Gunnedah.
Applications are now open for those who want to spend 2018 abroad.
Under the Rotary Youth Exchange program, the student’s family pays for their travel and for 30 days of travel within their host family.
Their living expenses are met by their host families – who are carefully selected through Rotary – and Rotary provides a living allowance.
Students are aged between 15 and 18 and three months, and must go through an application process.
Each month the students – both those living in Australia and those who are overseas – write a report about their experiences.
