The 66-year-old cannot be identified for legal reasons but Fairfax Media can reveal he was charged with a string of offences by Oxley detectives on Thursday afternoon.
Police will allege in court the man sexually abused a young girl in the Quirindi area over a 12-year period.
Two Oxley detectives travelled to Roma in Queensland before the man was arrested by Queensland police on Wednesday.
He spent the night in Queensland police custody before appearing in the Roma Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning.
Oxley Detective Acting Inspector Jason Darcy said the arrest followed a two-year investigation.
“An arrest warrant for the 66-year-old man was granted by a NSW court,” he told Fairfax Media on Thursday.

The man was placed into the custody of NSW police and driven four-and-a-half hours south in the back of a police car to Moree Police Station where the NSW arrest warrant was formally executed.
“Police will allege in court the acts were committed against one female who was under the age of 16 at the time of the allege offending,” Detective Acting Inspector Darcy said.
“The alleged offending occurred between 1965 and 1977 in the Quirindi area.”
The man is facing 12 sex abuse charges.
“The charges include rape, carnal knowledge of a girl aged between 10 and 16 years old and committing acts of indecency,” Detective Acting Inspector Darcy said.
“These are the charges that were in place at the time of the alleged offending.”
He was refused bail and is due to appear in an out-of-sessions court on Friday.
Detective Acting Inspector Darcy said the investigation was launched in 2015 after a complaint was made to police.
A woman came forward alleged she was abused in the Quirindi area, he said, prompting the probe by detectives.
These type of inquiries can be protracted but this was a thorough and meticulous investigation and it shows the level of dedication that our local detectives have in these matters.
