The Gunnedah Bird Sale and Expo will be held on Saturday, April 8 at the Gunnedah Showground.
The expo will attract around 5000 birds, with everything from zebra finches to Amazon parrots up for sale.
From families with their eye on a new budgie, to collectors with their heart set on a macaw or a rare colour of a particular parrot, the pavilion will be packed with bird fanciers, with organisers expecting up to 1500 people through the doors.
Last years event saw birds of all sizes and colours, with hundreds turning up to either take a look at the huge variety on display, or add to their own bird collection. More than 150 sellers were at the event, along with trade stalls for bird-related products.
Organiser Greg Brandon from the Namoi Valley Aviculture Club said this year’s event is shaping up to be of similar size.
“We are hoping to have around that 5000 bird mark but we are hoping the current weather up in Queensland doesn’t deter sellers from making their way down to the sale,” Mr Brandon said.
He said rare bird breeds such as blue and gold macaws can fetch up to $4000 per bird, or Amazon parrots around $2000 to $3000.
“There will be something for everyone at the expo,” Mr Brandon said.
“Fairly popular breeds at the moment are Amazons and quaker parrots.
“There is everything if you want to get started in the bird scene, from birds, to seeds and cages.”
There will be 26 trade stalls set up in the Griffith Pavilion, selling everything from bird seed to aviaries, nest boxes, books and other bird-related products.
The bird sale will be held in the Judi Guest Basketball Stadium.
Doors open to the public at 10am and close at 2pm. Admission is $2.
