Crime Prevention Committee chairwoman Colleen Fuller hoped to secure a further $200,000 in funding for more Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras near Wolseley Park and the library.
“That would mean a fully CCTV main street,” Mrs Fuller said. “It’s about keeping everyone safe.”
The committee is working with police and local council to provide coverage in known problem areas such as the Woseley Park intersection between Conadilly and Chandos streets.
“We have to clean up that park area,” she said.
“It’s very dark.”
Areas around the library and adjacent Abbott St intersection have also been flagged for improvement.
“There is some money in the budget for it,” she said.
Also in the committee’s sights is a continued action against domestic violence in the community.
“We will be heavily involved again this year,” she said.
Gunnedah’s “In Their Shoes” campaign last year included a roadside display of nearly 270 pairs of predominately women and children’s shoes alongside a banner bearing the hashtag “Gunnedah says no to violence”. The shoes represented the number of domestic violence cases thought to occur in the Gunnedah community each year.
A new Crime Prevention Working Group has also been named but more nominations are being sought.
Mrs Fuller urged anyone interested in the safety of their local community, to nominate.
“Don’t sit back and think about it, just do it,” she said.
“We’re open to new ideas and fresh thinking for our community.”
Community members already appointed include Aleasha Brown, Rhonda Smith, Kate Mackley and Neville Mammen.
