The self-taught, novice aviator started flying drones as a hobby but was quickly hooked, backed by an inkling the industry was “about to burn”.
More recently Mr Thomas branched out into photography and video with his own Facebook page “The Skys the Limit” and Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) drone pilot licence, to boot.
“It’s the end result [from photos] that keeps me going,” he said.
His flights have captured some amazing, unedited images about town in Gunnedah, particularly night scenes.
Looking ahead, the former miner and proud “born and bred” Gunnedah local, said the opportunities were endless for drone capabilities.
“They’re already delivering pizzas and coffee in the US, and it’s used as shark spotter here,” he said. “I think in the next 15 years they will have to traffic control them.
“It’s still a new industry but people are slowly becoming more aware.”
