One of five sides that contested the annual pre-season tournament, which dates back over 60 years, Gunnedah started the day with a 3-nil win over Quirindi.
They were then edged out by Tamworth 2-1 before going down to South Armidale 6-3.
They ended the day with a 3-1 win over Kamilaroi.
It was an encouraging first hit-out for Gunnedah as they prepare to defend their Tamworth competition first grade title.
“We thought the day went pretty well,” Gunnedah secretary Matt Davis said.
They have had a bit of a turnover from the side that defeated Quirindi in an epic final last season, and used Saturday as a chance to get a look at some of the new faces and try others in different positions.
“It’s looking pretty promising,” Davis said.
“We’re expecting to go well this season.”
He said they have been getting good numbers to training, which is a bit of a change.
“Usually we’re chasing at this time of the year,” he said.
They sent over a mix of first and second grade players and finished strongly in both of the games they lost.
“We had a good game against Tamworth,” Davis said.
“We conceded two soft goals to start with.
“We won the second half and threatened well throughout the second half.”
Tamworth won the Cup.
