The council is partnering with Gunnedah GoCo for the consultation process, with the workshops will be held in the Baxter Room of the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club.
Council said the action plan will seek to identify strategies and actions to enhance accessibility in its operations and service delivery, cultivate a positive attitudes towards people with a disability, increase employment for people with a disability, and ensure universe access and design principals are promoted.
“In accordance with the NSW Disability Inclusion Act 2014, and with over 1.3 million people in NSW living with disability, the development of the plan provides us with a great opportunity to actively engage with disability support providers, people with disability and the broader community to identify barriers to the way people with access council’s services, infrastructure, programs and events,” Gunnedah mayor Jamie Chaffey.
“The focus of the plan will be across four key areas; attitudes and behaviours, liveable communities, employment, and the systems and processes adopted by council in the delivery of its services.
“As an organisation we are committed to becoming both a champion and advocate for accessibility and inclusion, and in doing so we look forward to having a conversation with the community and in particular people with disability, to maximise the potential that this plan will provide, and to develop strategies and actions which embrace the principles of universal design.”
Gunnedah GoCo’s Kate Mackley is a member of the project team for the action plan and said the workshops were the “last phase of consultation” before the plan is drafted.
“Gunnedah has amazing facilities for people with a disability, from early intervention and GS Kidd [Memorial School] to a range of disability service providers,” she said.
“Council and GoCo understand the need for accessibility and inclusion to be extended into the mainstream planning and development of our community, and this consultation will guide the Disability Inclusion Action Plan and determine the initiatives council will deliver over the next four years.”
