Do koalas eat eucalyptus leaves exclusively? The answer from Local Land Services North West is no.
It has been noted that koalas eat soil quite often - with footage posted on the Gunnedah’s Project Koala Facebook page to prove it. The footage was captured recently in Porcupine reserve, with the koala really digging into it.
Why do they eat it? Local Land Services says probably for extra/trace minerals, but it is not certain. They are also known to eat other species besides eucalyptus.
