Facilitator Julie Frend said the “brainstorming” session also helped pool ideas on methods to stretch the disability dollar further in the new age of disability reform.
“It can be quite daunting when starting something new but we just need to keep it moving,” Ms Frend said.
Ideas from service providers, parents and families in attendance were offered including a social club, a Boccia games day and music workshop. Ms Frend said the idea was to make it inclusive for everyone.
“It’s not only for people with disability but everyone in the community,” she said.
The community was encouraged to “think outside the box” in its approach to ideas creation. Local business with support of service providers, was also invited to suggest ways to improve access and inclusiveness.
Ms Frend said sometimes when businesses are approached, they are nervous about the legalities of helping out. But they shouldn’t be, she said, as their assistance can be incorporated under the umbrella of a service provider.
Kate Mackley from GoCo will facilitate communication for the group.
The next scheduled community meeting will be held at House With No Steps in Bridge St on May 11 at 6pm. All are welcome.
