A Year 10 student of St Mary’s College, Lachlan was aided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander focus teacher, Samantha Kennedy, in applying for the opportunity.

The teen’s success is pegged to his outstanding achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) which greatly interest him.

“Lachlan is genuinely interested in an engineering career and with continued knowledge and understanding in mathematics and science together with encouragement from programs such as ASSETS, he would be capable of achieving this goal,” Ms Kennedy said.

The student will spend time in Adelaide from January 14-22, with return airfares, accommodation and meals provided.

During the nine-day program, Lachlan will attend numerous workshops with a focus on cultural and academic learning, and personal development.

“I found out about it from Ms Kennedy and thought it would be a good way to learn more stuff,” Lachlan said.

“I’m excited about doing something new and seeing what the university is like.”

ASSETS is one element of the Indigenous STEM Education program managed by CSIRO and funded by the BHP Billiton Foundation.

The initiative aims to improve participation and achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Lachlan is the second St Mary’s student to be chosen for ASSETS in recent years.
