Captains Richard and Gaye Day are trialling a new program for the festive season, asking the community to register to help a local family by donating toys and food so a hamper can be created.
Ten families have been chosen to receive toy and food hampers, with plans to deliver them in the week leading up to Christmas.
The Days said that while individual donations for Christmas were always appreciated, by pinpointing some of the families most in need and meeting those needs, it meant a whole family could benefit.
“Doing this helps us reach more families in the community,” Richard said.
“Some of the people on [this list] wouldn’t normally ask for help.”
Gaye said the Salvos had worked with most of the families recently and had thought, “Let’s bless this family”.
She said she heard of the idea when the Salvation Army in Emerald ran an ‘adopt-a-family’ initiative in the lead-up to Christmas, and has hopes it will take off in the Gunnedah area.
