The free Try a Trade event, a first of its kind in NSW, will offer years 10-11 students to “get a feel” for future job careers in Gunnedah.
Ten job fields will be available in the pilot program including aeronautics, engineering, automotive mechanical, electro-technology, construction, nursing, aged care and child care, hospitality, beauty and hairdressing, graphic design and business.
COC administration and member support officer Alysha White said the expo was about boosting and importantly retaining Gunnedah’s skilled tradespeople.
“A lot of people are getting trained here then going elsewhere,” Ms White said. “But Gunnedah has a great future for them, we’re growing all the time. We’re hoping to get more kids into TAFE places, benefiting local business with trained apprentices.”
Participants could select four trade preferences to trial at Try a Trade on November 5. Allocation would be first-come, first-served.
Trade stalls would be run primarily by TAFE instructors but qualified tradespeople were asked to volunteer a few hours of time. Email: admin@gunnedah.org.au to register.
