Work began on the former Centrelink building in May, after a delay of around six months, while the church community waited for a construction certificate to be issued.
The substantial space has been divided into different sections to accommodate the needs of the congregation.
The central point of the building is a large area for church services, which has been outfitted with modern technology. There is also a kitchen with a servery window, two Sunday School rooms, two offices, a family room, and a space for youth group and other activities.
“The next stage is carpet and finishing off the kitchen,” Captain Richard Day said.
“I’m feeling really good about it now that I’m seeing it. It’s actually going to happen. It’s more of a reality.”
The Salvos has outgrown its building in Barber Street and has been meeting in the Carinya Christian School Hall for about three years.
“The church is getting more excited,” he said.
The purchase of the building was made possible through a legacy left by an private donor about 15-20 years ago. The Salvos building on Barber Street will be sold, with a small percentage of the sale figure to go towards the new building.
Captain Day said the space would provide new opportunities to expand their services and become more integrated with the community.
“I feel excited going into a new era with the Salvos in Gunnedah,” he said.
“[I’m] looking forward to what that might look like.”
