Hawks coach Gary Sams counted at least 16 missing across two grades.
“Some were sick, others away working… it all just happened to be that day,” Sams said.
The majority who ran out for the Hawks in second grade backed up in A grade as well.
Despite the player-deficit, Gunnedah was down only 1-0 at half-time in the main fixture.
Three second-half goals to the Tamworth outfit sealed the deal for a 4-0 win by full-time. But coach Sams was pleased with the result given the circumstances.
“I’m pretty happy about it,” he said.
“It was a great effort considering the players we had available.
“The majority of them played second grade.
“We just tried to limit the goals.”
Among those to shine for Gunnedah included goal-keeper Blake Small, who performed admirably under pressure.
Defender Damien Blinman also had a busy game but was up to the task of restricting the opposition attack.
Meanwhile Katlin Hatcher played well despite facing much heavier, stronger attack from Companions.
Sams expected to field a full 27-player squad for this weekend’s games against neighbouring club side, Gunnedah FC.
Sams said they will be competitive against the top-ranked FC side.
