The second tier side lost 55-14 to home-town Barraba.
“We had a lot of guys away, a few at work, a couple in Europe… we were a bit underdone,” Devils coach Jason Waerea said.
Work commitments meant regular halfback Ben Maunder was unavailable at late notice. The task to steer the side fell to William Flinn who did so admirably, the coach said.
“We sent out an SOS to make the numbers, we were glad just to put a team on the field,” he said.
Breakaway Jeremy Brown picked up the Devils’ three points, Jamie Mitchell two while DJ Morrison and Zac Newcombe shared one.
Every remaining game for Gunnedah is must-win if they are to stay in contention for sixth position on Central North Rugby’s tier one leaderboard and keep finals hopes alive.
“From here, every game for us is a grand final.”
