Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson is chairing the Investment, Industry and Regional Development Committee that will consider exemptions from, or concessions in relation to, payroll tax, stamp duty and land tax.
The local National Party MP said zonal taxation - which would raise income tax rate thresholds for those living in the bush - has been an issue he’s been hearing about for the past four years.
“The further you get away from Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, the cheaper it should be for businesses to operate,” Mr Anderson said.
“The committee will look at all taxes and charges but if we can have a look at payroll tax and a zonal taxation regime - whatever that may look like - I’m excited to put this into action.”
He said businesses in Tamworth, Gunnedah and Barraba have been particularly concerned about payroll tax and the related threshold.
“These are local businesses who want to employ more people but they can’t because it’s costing them money and they don’t get the return on investment,” he said.
The committee will also investigate concessions in relation to utility charges and the impact of fuel levies on regional growth.
