Nationally, the Salvos will distribute thousands of gifts to those in need this festive season, with Gunnedah residents among those to benefit.
“We want to share the hope, joy and love of Christmas with everyone, particularly those who need it most at this time of year,” Salvation Army Doorways caseworker Shannon Price said.
Salvos is encouraging Gunnedah residents to drop donations off at the Family Store (36 Chandos Street) or Hope House (38 Hopedale Avenue).
Volunteers are preparing hundreds of gifts for distribution in Gunnedah but Captain Richard Day said more donations were needed.
“The more we get, the more we can help,” he said.
Mr Day said donated gifts were usually aimed at children but it was also important to remember adults at Christmas.
“The adults need something as well,” he said.
Families in need can phone the Salvos Assessment Line (SAL) on 1300 371 288 and access Christmas presents by contacting Gunnedah Salvos on 6742 5383.
A free community Christmas barbecue will be held at Hope House on Friday, December 18, at 6pm. Kids can enjoy a jumping castle and face painting.
“Christmas for many people is about connecting with family and friends, but for some it can be a lonely time,” Mr Day said.
“No one should spend Christmas alone. Please come along – we love seeing both new and familiar faces.”
Those attending the barbecue are asked to bring a Secret Santa gift to the value of $5 or something they have made.
“This is to encourage giving and to show that you don’t always have to spend large amounts of money to give something,” Mr Day said.
Gunnedah Salvos will hold a Christmas Eve church service and pot luck supper on December 24, at 6.30pm, in the Barber Street building.
