The Movember Foundation runs the “Movember” charity event, with a mission statement “to change the face of men’s health”.
Like other volunteer firefighters, “Mo Bros” Ian Crawford, Ben Wilkinson, Sam Turner, Andrew George, Luke Ross and Adrian Melick are acutely aware of the stress involved in their roles.
“This can often lead to depression and mental health problems,” Ben Wilkinson said.
“We are also concerned about the physical health of men generally – some of our own have health concerns – and this is one way we can help raise awareness and offer support.
“The nature of this job is helping people and it is for a good cause – we would be grateful for any support.”
The boys have just one week left to nuture their facial fuzz and with the mercury creeping up to 40 degrees this week, they are keen to shave their adornments off.
By encouraging men to get involved, Movember aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths.
Besides annual check-ups, the Movember Foundation also urges men to be aware of family history of cancer and to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
The firefighters are being supported by other members of the brigade, with Deputy Captain Dave Welsh praising their efforts.
“It is for a great cause and we are proud of them,” he said. “We are grateful for the support so far and are hoping that the community will get behind the boys and help them reach their target of $1000.”
