By the time you read this article, this year’s running of Australia’s greatest horse race will be run and won.
There will, of course, be happiness and woe from the winners and losers, sore heads and sickies tomorrow and countless tales of “I should’ve backed the winner”.
It is the race that makes mug punters of us all, a time for that old Aussie tradition of “having a flutter on the geegees” and when common sense tells us it is the one race you should leave alone.
There is only one certainty in a Melbourne Cup – they are all trying – which makes it that much harder to pick the the first past the post.
But who cares? everyone loves a winner.
Across the nation the ladies “frock up”, the blokes have a beer or three and pubs and clubs are packed out from as far and wide as north of Queensland to the bottom tip of Tassie just to watch 24 horses do battle for the lion’s share of a mind-numbing $6 million in prizemoney.
At the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club, those lucky enough to have the day off were warming to the task at hand for the racing social event of the year. Meanwhile, the children at Goodstart Early Learning turned out in their racing best.
