Ellerston won the Gunnedah Cup, beating Branch Creek which took home the Kibah Cup as beaten A grade finalists.
The carnival was played on a weekend that saw some outstanding polo in perfect weather conditions on a Gunnedah ground in tip-top order.
Warrah Creek took out the CH Edwards Cup in B grade from Carmyle which earned the WJ Maslin Memorial Trophy.
Downs won C grade and the KC Murchison Cup with Tamworth taking out the President’s Trophy as the beaten side in this division.
A Grade Pony went to George Hill’s “Beaujolais” with Glen Gilmore winning the Team of Ponies.
Will Gilmore’s “Espirit” was named B Grade Pony with Club Pony going to Katrina Osborne’s “Becky”.
C or D Grade Pony went to Andrew Campbell’s “Dakar” with Cody Grimes being named the Most Improved Junior player.
Most Improved Player was Katrina Osborne with the Best and Fairest Player award going to Phil Clift.
Fifteen teams including two junior teams battled it out over three grades over the weekend.
Favourites Ellerston won the A grade in a hard-fought match against North Star winning 5 to 4½.
The Gunnedah team playing in the C grade with father-daughter combination Ben Osborne, and Katrina Osborne, along with Phil Clift and Mark Barber, had been undefeated until the finals on Sunday.
The Gunnedah Team’s winning streak finally came to an end when they drew with the Downs team, five- all.
However, Gunnedah’s up-and-coming player, 16-year-old Katrina Osborne, did win the Most Improved Player award and her horse “Becky” won the Club Pony Prize.
The junior matches consisting of newcomers to the sport, Julia Chambers, Jack Davidson, Sam Osborne, Codie Grimes, Harry Davidson and Lachie Clift, entertained the crowd.
The children were lucky to have two of Australia’s top rated players playing along side them with Glen Gilmore and Matt Grimes.
Three generations of the Grimes family played in the B grade – Peter Grimes, his son Matt, and 11-year-old grandson, Jack.
Teamed with Malcolm Pursehouse they won the B grade finals.
