Hosted by the Gunnedah Touch Association in collaboration with NSW Touch, the Primary Schools Gala Day at Longmuir Fields aims to promote the sport among junior players.
Gala co-ordinator Casey Hatch already has 24 teams on the books across two divisions in years 3-4 and 5-6. Schools from St Michael’s Primary, Manilla, Gunnedah South, Westdale Public, Coolah Central, Boggabri Public and Curlewis Public are nominated.
“We have taken this opportunity to have a gala day to not only introduce kids to the game of touch football and help promote the game through the schools,” Hatch said.
“We will also be looking at kids that are interested in playing representative touch for Gunnedah as well as in our local junior competitions.”
Will Dowe from Gunnedah South said their school already has an existing touch team which features regularly in local junior competitions. South School players from years 4, 5 and 6 are already in training for the gala.
Gunnedah hosts a junior club competition for 8-12 year old on Monday nights 4.30-5.30pm and pee wee 4-7 year olds on Wednesday nights 5-5.30pm during term 4 of school. Kids register individually and then are allocated teams. High school students will also be involved as match referees at the gala day held on Thursday, September 3 in Gunnedah.
If your school would like to enter a team and support this locally-run event, contact Casey on 0429 457 624.
